Quality Control Thermowells Mountains

DEFINITION OF TERMS

We want you to understand our products and product specifications completely. If you are new to the industry or just need a refresher, please see the terms below. When you are comfortable with these terms we will be more able to help you when you order. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Bore

The diameter of the internal cylindrical cavity of a thermowell or protection tube

Immersion Length or "U" Depth

The length of a thermowell or protection tube below the mounting threads, flange, bushing, etc. extending into the process area

Internal Mounting Thread

The thread within the thermowell for attaching a temperature device of the union and nipple extension for a thermowell assembly

Lagging Extension

The length of a thermowell, in addition to the standard head lengths, required to make the head of the thermowell accessible (e.g., length required to extend the head through a wall of insulation)

Mounting Bushing

The part on a protection tube necessary to adapt the protection tube to the desired mating part

NPT

National Pipe Taper - designation for standard pipe threads

Process Connection or O.D. Thread

Thread or flange employed to adapt the thermowell or protection tube to the mating process attachment

Bi-Met Thermowell

The last 21/2" is stepped down to 1/2" O.D - the last 2 1/2" are for sensitivity

Tapered Thermowell

Well starts at a larger O.D. under the process connection and is tapered down to a smaller dimension at the end of the well for sensitivity and strength (A tapered well will withstand more velocity than a Straight or Bi-Met thermowell)

Protection Tube

A tube or system of tubes designed to protect a temperature sensor from an adverse environment - available in either metal or ceramic materials

Standard Head Length

The length of a thermowell necessary to form the process connection and head

Thermowell

A device designed to protect a temperature sensor from an adverse environment - Available in many configurations and materials

Wall Thickness

Designation of the thinnest wall thickness on a thermowell

Web Thickness

The minimum material thickness at the immersion end of a thermowell or protection tube
